چکیده

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this project were to (1) identify the heterotrophic bacteria that colonize chloraminated distribution systems using bench-scale, pilot-scale, and full-scale environments, (2) determine whether benchscale and pilot-scale chloraminated systems are adequate models of full-scale chloraminated distribution systems, in regards to heterotrophic bacteria, and (3) explore the development of an automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA)-based screening test to identify culturable heterotrophic bacteria in drinking water distribution systems.

Occurrence of nitrifying bacteria and nitrification in Finnish drinking water distribution systems.

Microbiological nitrification process may lead to chemical, microbiological and technical problems in drinking water distribution systems. Nitrification activity is regulated by several physical, and chemical, and operational factors. However, the factors affecting nitrification in the distribution systems in boreal region, having its specific environmental characteristics, are poorly known. We...

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in a chloraminated distribution system: seasonal occurrence, distribution and disinfection resistance.

Nitrification in chloraminated drinking water can have a number of adverse effects on water quality, including a loss of total chlorine and ammonia-N and an increase in the concentration of heterotrophic plate count bacteria and nitrite. To understand how nitrification develops, a study was conducted to examine the factors that influence the occurrence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in a c...

A survey of heterotrophic bacteria and coliforms in the water of old and new distribution networks

Controlling the microbiological quality of water is important for its uses. Microbiological requirements of drinking water ensure the absence of coliforms, but may indicate the potential presence of other potentially pathogenic microorganisms and viruses of fecal origin. A total of 36 water samples, representing the drinking water of the whole city of Aradan, Semnan, Iran, were randomly collect...

Heterotrophic Bacteria Count Index in Drinking Water and Possibility of Biofilm Formation in Household Drinking Water Treatment Devices in Sari, Iran

Background and purpose: Household drinking water treatment devices are becoming commonplace to improve the quality of drinking water, remove odor, taste, turbidity and color, pathogenic organisms, toxic chemicals, organic matter, and carcinogenic pollutants. This study aimed at investigating the Heterotrophic plate count (HPC) in drinking water and possibility of biofilm formation in household...

Ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing bacterial communities in a pilot-scale chloraminated drinking water distribution system.

Nitrification in drinking water distribution systems is a common operational problem for many utilities that use chloramines for secondary disinfection. The diversity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in the distribution systems of a pilot-scale chloraminated drinking water treatment system was characterized using terminal restriction fragment length polym...
